Dolly Parton Wins Emmy for ‘Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square’

Dolly Parton took home her first-ever Emmy award for her Netflix movie, Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square, at the 2021 Creative Arts Emmys over the weekend. The movie was honored with the awards of Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Choreography for Scripted Programming. The latter award went to longtime actress/dancer and the movie’s director and choreographer, Debbie Allen.
“Well how happy can I be to have won a @televisionacad Emmy for the @netflixfamily film #ChristmasontheSquare! And I’m so thrilled for my dear friend @therealdebbieallen on winning for choreography. Thanks everybody for everything,” wrote Parton on social media.
The movie, released on Netflix in November 2020, follows the story of a wealthy woman (played by Christine Baranski) who returns to her hometown with the intention of evicting the town’s residents until she has an encounter with an angel (Parton). The film also stars Jenifer Lewis, Josh Segarra, Jeanine Mason and others. The movie features many songs that were written and recorded by Parton.
Although this win marks Parton’s first victory at the Emmys, she has been nominated multiple times. She was previously nominated for her part in 1978’s Cher… Special as well as for her previous TV movies, Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love and Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings: These Old Bones. Parton adds the Emmy award to her impressive list of honors, which includes 11 Grammy awards, 10 Academy of Country Music awards, 13 Country Music Association awards, and countless other honors and nominations. More television awards will be given out at the Primetime Emmy Awards on September 19.
