Five Questions With Jamie Lynn Spears

Jamie Lynn Spears - CountryMusicIsLove 2

After taking some time out of the spotlight to raise her adorable daughter Maddie, Jamie Lynn Spears is back and ready to follow her dreams of having a career in country music. The Louisiana native, who is best known for her role on Nickelodeon’s “Zoey 101,” has been hard at work writing and recording songs for her country music debut. Late last year, Spears wow-ed fans with the release of “How Could I Want More,” a song she penned alongside famed songwriter Rivers Rutherford. The music video to accompany the song has more than 3 million views on YouTube (watch HERE).

CountryMusicIsLove recently caught up with Spears, who is set to perform at the upcoming 5th Annual CountryMusicIsLove Concert Benefiting City of Hope, to chat about her debut single, what fans can expect from her upcoming album, and more. See what she had to say below.

CMIL: You’ve been working on this music for quite some time now. How does it feel to finally get it out there for your fans?

JLS: It’s really exciting because I’m sharing my story. All these songs mean so much to me. It’s a very sensitive thing for me. Whenever I play my shows I usually cry at some point because the songs mean so much to me. It’s a happy cry. I’m finally able to share these things with my fans. It means a lot to me.

CMIL: Tell us more about the song “How Could I Want More”…

JLS: This song was written almost four years ago. I wrote it with Rivers Rutherford, who of course is an amazing songwriter. It was when I was going through this time in my life where my now fiancée, we were kind of in a transition stage. I had just moved to Nashville full-time and I was focusing on being a mom and focusing on my work. I was having the struggle of how could I want more? He’s a great guy, but I was really was just not in a place to be in that relationship. It’s funny, if you fast forward to where I am now and I’m going to marry this man and the song really came full circle. It’s an older song, but it still means so much to me. It was written at a very vulnerable time. Every time I sing it, it just brings all that back up.

CMIL: A lot of fans were pleasantly surprised that the single is more country (vs country-pop). Should they expect the same for the rest of your music?

JLS: The thing that people don’t get is that I never lived in L.A. My world has always been Louisiana. I worked in L.A. and when I was young, but I was born and raised in Louisiana. This is just what is in my heart. It wasn’t some thought to what my music was going to sound like. I just knew that when it was right I would know. I have this song, which is obviously a more traditional country song, but I have my fun moments of course because I am 22 and I have a little girl. I want to have those songs that we can be silly and dance to. I also want to share that mature side to me as well.

CMIL: Speaking of more music – How is your album coming along?

JLS: The album is definitely in the works. I’m pretty sure that all the songs are there, but we have to finish up the album. It’s in the works. I don’t have any set date, but I’m definitely working on it.

CMIL: It’s been a while since you’ve been in the spotlight. What made you decide that this is the right time to debut your music?

JLS: After I had my little girl I just really wanted to take time away to focus on my personal life, focus on being a mom, and really figure out the next step in my life in a professional sense and in a personal sense. I know it seems like I haven’t been doing anything, but actually I went to Nashville – my little girl will be six in June – so almost six years ago and I started writing music. This whole time I’ve been working, but you haven’t seen me work. I’ve just been staying out of the limelight and just really figuring out who I was as an artist. I wanted this next move to be the right one. I spent my time and sat with the music really that’s what I’ve been working on the past six years, is music and of course being a mom.
