Picking a rather sentimental song to Scotty McCreery’s heart, the country star decided to take on Jamey Johnson’s 2009 hit, “In Color,” for the Forever Country Cover Series.

With his signature deep voice and downhome twang, McCreery tackles the recent classic with his fresh and young perspective. The track just so happened to be something that McCreery didn’t really grow up on, but it still influenced his life in a massive way for it was the stepping stone into his country career.

“I picked ‘In Color’ by Jamey Johnson and always loved the song. This was actually a song I sang in my first competition singing-wise back in 2009, actually the first time I sang outside of church. So this song, in a weird sort of way, got me started singing out in public so I like this song really,” explained McCreery exclusively to Sounds Like Nashville during his cover session.

Johnson’s “In Color” was a huge radio success and ended up winning the CMA Award for Song of the Year in 2009. As McCreery said, without a song like that, he wouldn’t be in the position he’s worked for today.

The Forever Country Cover Series is working in part of the 50th anniversary of the CMA Awards, which is honoring artists in the format from both then and now. Putting together tons of fan footage like classic covers, collaborations and more, the Forever Country websites features a number of exciting projects in order to pump fans up for the 50th Annual CMA Awards.

The 50th Annual CMA Awards airs live from downtown Nashville on Wednesday, November 2, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
