Gabby Barrett and Charlie Puth united for the first time on the 2020 CMA Awards stage for the debut performance of their collaborative “I Hope.”

Puth kicked off the performance with a series of harmonic notes, leading the way for Barrett to come in with her bold voice, establishing a moody presence as she sang perched on a stool center stage. Puth then stepped in on the adapted second verse that tells the story from the male perspective, seeking revenge on the lover who cheated on him, the two joining forces on the scathing chorus that proclaims “I hope she comes along and wrecks every one of your plans / I hope you spend your last dime to put a rock on her hand / I hope she’s wilder than your wildest dreams / She’s everything you’re ever gonna need / And then I hope she cheats / Like you did on me,” their powerful voices soaring over one another.

This week, the song achieved a significant feat when it crossed into the top five on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100. The American Idol finalist is also up for New Artist of the Year while her original version of “I Hope” was nominated for Single of the Year, which went to Maren Morris’ “The Bones.”

Barrett performed the solo version of the song at last month’s CMT Music Awards, and she just released an emotional rendition of “The First Noel” for Christmas.

Meanwhile, Gabby Barrett is currently just a few weeks away from the birth of her first child with husband Cade Foehner.

Co-hosted by Darius Rucker and Reba McEntire, the 54th Annual CMA Awards aired live on ABC from Nashville’s Music City Center on November 11.
