The live concert industry may be shut down for months to come, but that’s not stopping Garth Brooks and his drive to innovate. The country megastar has just revealed plans for an ambitious, continent spanning drive-in concert, gathering fans together for one huge show while still respecting social distancing.

Set for June 27 in 300 drive-in theaters across North America, the event has been dubbed Encore Live Presents a Garth Brooks Drive In Concert Experience, and it’s a big, audacious plan. Instead of fans coming to him like a normal show (or even one of the drive-in concerts others like Keith Urban have tested), Brooks will be projected onto giant drive-in screens across the nation, all at the same time. Audience numbers will be small in each location but have the potential to be massive if counted together, and it will most likely be the largest event of its kind ever attempted.

“They’re going to run it just like a regular concert, but this is going to be all over North America, one night only,” Brooks told Good Morning America Thursday (June 11). “We are excited because this is a reason to get out of the house, but at the same time you get to follow all the COVID rules from every individual state and you get to have fun and stay within the guidelines of social distancing … we’re calling it ‘social distancing partying.'”

According to Encore, safety protocols will include maintaining at least six feet of distance between vehicles, the use of personal protective equipment by employees, limiting capacity in restrooms and relying on contactless payment and ticketing systems. Tickets go on sale June 19 with roughly 250-300 tickets per drive-in going for $100 per vehicle, so if the event sells out with four fans in each vehicle, Brooks would be playing to 360,000 fans at once.
