Rising country group Gone West recently sat down Sam Alex from the nationally-syndicated The Sam Alex Show to talk about their journey together to music, love and more. The four-person group consists of Colbie Caillat, Justin Young, Jason Reeves and Nelly Joy. Perhaps unbeknownst to some, Caillat is engaged to Young, and Reeves and Joy have been married for 7 years now.

“Jason and I have been writing together for 13 years. Justin and I have been playing in a band together for 12 years. And Nelly and Jason have been writing together for 10 years,” Caillat shared, explaining the long partnership everyone has had with each other in the group. “There’s been a lot of history with this band and why I guess it’s natural for us to be singing together and writing these songs together.”

The quartet signed their record deal with Triple Tigers Records in January this year and just shipped their debut single “What Could’ve Been” to country radio last month. However, the music industry is nothing new to them. Caillat has been in the pop world for over a decade and Joy was part of duo The JaneDear Girls for 7 years.

Showcasing the group’s synchronicity, when Alex asked who the group’s dream collaboration would be, the response was spontaneously unanimous: “Coldplay!”

For Joy, that connection and power of music was very palpable at one of the legendary band’s shows. “I was so emotional. I teared up because… the energy, it was almost like being in a church. There was just so much love and celebration and everyone was on the same page. I just love that about their shows! You can be having the worst day, the worst week and you go in to that arena and you just feel this united movement and that’ just inspiring and what we would love to do, you know?”

Concluding their chat, each of the four members shared their life motto and inspiration. Caillat, for one, shared a Gandhi quote that she holds closely to her as a life motto: “be the change you want to be in the world.”

Fans can requests “What Could’ve Been” on country radio now. And be sure to follow Sam Alex on Twitter to keep up with his radio show and upcoming interviews.
