Hit songwriter and emerging artist Hardy pulls a romantic fast one with his latest release, telling his girl their current relationship is over and done in “Boyfriend.”

A country-rock fake out written by the singer with Zach Abend and Andy Albert, it takes listeners on a rollercoaster of emotion, using some clever sleight of hand to pull a lyrical U-turn. Fed up and tired with the way things are, Hardy starts by getting straight to the point — “I don’t wanna be your boyfriend anymore,” he sings, with a solemn mix of beats and guitars behind him. But soon his real plan become clear, and the Mississippi native reveals the true change he’s looking for … and gets down on one knee.

“This song is definitely not what you think when you hear ‘I don’t want to be your boyfriend anymore,’” Hardy says. “The idea of this song comes from a personal experience, inspired by the one-and-only Caleigh Ryan, my girlfriend. This is the first ‘I love you’ song, that does not have a redneck twist that I’m releasing — the first real vulnerable love song that I’ve put out, and I’m excited for people to see that side of what I do.”

True enough. “Boyfriend” is part of the rising star’s forthcoming debut album, A Rock, which is set for release September 4 and follows a number of new-school redneck anthems. First with the aptly titled “Rednecker,” then with the star-studded tracks on his Hixtape, Vol. 1 and now with his current single, “One Beer” featuring Lauren Alaina and Devin Dawson, Hardy brings a new energy to the blue-collar theme.

“One Beer” is nearing the Top 15 at country radio, and he’s earning plenty of attention for his songwriting, too. Hardy is nominated for two awards at the upcoming 55th ACM Awards — Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year for Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country” — and he just celebrated his fifth Number One as a writer with LOCASH’s “One Big Country Song.”
