Hear Cam’s Gorgeous Cover of French Pop Hit ‘La Marcheuse’

Cam puts a Parisian spin on her California country style in a newly-released track, singing in French for an intriguing cover of Christine and the Queens’ “La Marcheuse.”

Sounding quite at home with the language, Cam slips easily into a stripped down but still luxurious rendition of the song, a delicate exploration of powerful subject matter. “La Marcheuse” means “The Walker” in English, and its abstract lyrics are all about not backing down in the face of violence against the LGBTQ community. The original electronic pop version arrived as part of the band’s acclaimed 2018 album, Chris, but in Cam’s hands becomes a quiet, rootsy ballad.

“I’ve been in awe of Christine and the Queens – the art and theater of what Chris is doing right now pushes people to reflect on vulnerability and strength, and the gender associations that color those concepts for us,” Cam explains. “Which resonates deeply with me, and feels within arms reach of the darkness and light I’ve been exploring to create my upcoming album.”

No word on when that album will be ready, but for the past few years Cam has been proudly testing the genre-boundaries of country — including with the pulsating “So Long” collaboration with DJ and producer Diplo. Later this month, she’ll take “La Marcheuse” back to France and beyond, embarking on her international Oh, The Places We’ll Go! Tour. The 10-date run kicks off August 31 and will visit cities across the UK and Europe, including Paris.

“This will be my first time playing my own music in Paris — last time I performed there was in stained-glass chapels and stone-walled cathedrals with a children’s choir when I was 13,” Cam says. “With every visit since, the city of Paris manages to etch a new stripe of wonder across my mind. To be playing my own show in that city and participate in such a grand cultural tradition of art … honestly it only feels right that I give an offering before I get there.”
