Kacey Musgraves Brings the House Down at the Grammy Awards With Emotional Performance

Tonight’s GRAMMY Awards proved that it’s Kacey Musgraves’ world and we’re lucky to be living in it. The singer, who won two awards before the show even started–one for Best Country Solo Performance for her song “Butterflies” and one as a songwriter (alongside Luke Laird and Shane McAnally) for “Space Cowboy”–took the stage to perform “Rainbow.”

Bathed in a single spotlight and accompanied by a rainbow-adorned piano, Musgraves gave a powerful performance of the bittersweet ballad, which paints her as the narrator encouraging someone who is going through a hard time.

As Musgraves made her way through the song, the impact of the moment was not lost on her and her voice broke with emotion.

By the end of the song, when she sang the uplifting line “let go of your umbrella / darlin’ I’m just tryin’ to tell ya / that there’s always been a rainbow hangin’ over your head,” the stage was illuminated by rainbow lights.

Mausgraves’ performance wasn’t the only “Rainbow” moment of the day. The singer, who told Ryan Seacrest the song was “for anybody going through anything” when she walked the GRAMMY red carpet, also released a video for the song in coordination with the awards.
