Actor and funnyman Leslie Jordan delivers a towering duet with Chris Stapleton and his wife, Morgane, on the new track “Farther Along.” It’s a fantastic fusion of gospel, country and rock — with a bit of fabulous fire-and-brimstone in the middle — and Jordan gave fans of his podcast the scoop.

Led by the diminutive star with a red-hot band, with blasting horns and backing vocals all around, “Farther Along” is a classic hymn updated with tons of energy — and it’s a perfect vehicle for three very different voices. Jordan starts it off only to be joined in soaring serenity by Morgane Stapleton… and then Chris shows up at the end, bringing the overwhelming power of the spirit with him. Normally the Grammy winning country artist would take star billing on a project like this, but not here. This time it’s Morgane who steals the show.

A behind-the-scenes video captured the moment of the song’s creation, filmed in a studio from Joshua Tree, California. And Jordan spoke about the experience for his Hunker Down Radio with Leslie Jordan on Apple Music Country.

“Mr. Chris Stapleton and his beautiful wife, we are singing together on a song called ‘Farther Along,'” Jordan said. “And I think it’s so giving of Chris to let Morgane take the lead on this one, because — she tears it up. It’s a song, an old hymn, ‘Farther Along.’ A lot of people have recorded it over the years, but wait until you hear our version. I sang a little bit, and then, I preach in it a little bit. And then all of a sudden, here he comes.… Belting out, ‘Farther along!’ I almost wet myself every time I hear it. I’ll run it forward just to that part, listen to it over and over again.”

The collab might seem like an unlikely one, but it’s not alone. Jordan’s version of “Farther Along” with Chris and Morgane Stapleton is part of his upcoming album, Company’s Comin’, which is due April 2 and also features Dolly Parton, Eddy Vedder, Brandi Carlile, Ashley McBryde and more.

Jordan currently stars on FOX’s new show, Call Me Kat. He’s best known for his role as Beverly Leslie on Will & Grace, as well as spots on Reba, Murphy Brown, Ugly Betty, Boston Legal and more.
