Luke Combs rocked a massive crowd at the 2022 Daytona 500 over the weekend, marking the start of another NASCAR season and the return of the iconic race’s fans.

Performing during a televised pre-race concert, the hit maker sang his new song “Doin’ This” as a fitting tribute to chasing glory — and the 200-mile-an-hour test of courage that is stock car racing.

Perched on a huge stage built directly on Daytona International Speedway’s pit road, Combs and his full band were playing to one of the biggest crowds he’ll see all year. With fans packing the bleechers and also spread out in the grassy infield, about 150,000 race fans were back in attendance for 2022, returning after COVID-19 kept them away last year. And Combs made it worth their while.

With his raspy, barrel-chested vocal sounding like a roaring V8, “Doin’ This” became a high-octane tribute to racing culture itself, all about chasing checkered flags despite the obvious danger. Combs sprinkled in multiple shout outs to Daytona, and fans rewarded him a big round of applause before he moved on the sing other, non-televised hits like “Forever After All” and “Beer Never Broke My Heart.”

When race day arrived, Trace Adkins was on hand to sing the national anthem, and the famous race was won by 23-year-old Austin Cindric. The young driver scored his first career Cup Series victory at the sport’s premiere event, but if you asked him he’d probably echo Combs’ song: He’d still be doin’ this, if he wasn’t doin’ this.
