Michael Ray takes attendance at the school of hard knocks in his video for “Higher Education,” and his classmates are some big names. The clip and recently-shared song features Lee Brice, ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons, Tim Montana and Kid Rock.

With a roll call like that, Ray was sure to end up with a rowdy lesson plan for fans — and the result is just as you’d expect. Highlighting the tune’s rebellious nature, the band of musical brothers hang out in a smoky pool hall and then hit the stage for a rowdy performance.

An easy-rocking chest thumper, filled with pride for the street smarts you can’t get in school, “Higher Education” was written by Montana, Derek George, Jeremy Bussey, Monty Criswell and Frank Rogers. It features ringing guitars, pounding drums and a rolling banjo underneath, all while Ray and his crew trade verses about backwoods wisdom like “Old guys tell the best bar jokes,” and “Don’t ever pass up the chance to smoke with Willie.”

“I got my higher education / Good ol’ boy, bad reputation / School of hard knocks with a 4.0 / Learnin’ how to rock, learnin’ how to roll / That homegrown into paper / Just a minor with a major / In hell raisin’ low expectations / From a higher education,” goes the chorus.

“Higher Education” is the title track from Ray’s recently released seven-song project, and the group also delivered a TV performance on Fox & Friends. Ray’s current single, “Whiskey And Rain,” is inside the Top 15 of the country radio charts.
