Ever wondered what Halloween looked like for Michael Ray as a toddler? Hint: It involves a bear.

In a recent interview with Sounds Like Nashville, the country star revealed that at two years old, he won a Halloween costume contest as the iconic (and adorable) Smokey Bear.

I’m not trying to brag but I did win a Halloween contest once when I was a baby as Smokey the Bear!” Ray exclaims enthusiastically.

He jokes, “I never won another one, so that’s where I peaked!”

While the “Whiskey And Rain” singer was too young to recollect that event, the image is embedded in his head thanks to his mother’s well documented photo collection of Ray. “My Mom has kept everything I’ve ever done my entire life,” he says. “So it’s in a box somewhere in her house. She always had it in a frame for some reason when we were growing up.”

The big question is, will we see Ray in a Smokey the Bear costume this year?

“Maybe I’ll bring it back. Maybe that’ll be my second [Halloween] award!”

Ray has been busy in the studio putting final touches to his third album, which promises to boast a throwback 90’s country sound. The record’s lead single, “Whiskey And Rain,” is out now. Listen to it on our New Nashville playlist below.
