Texas-based singer-songwriter Mike Ryan sings about the struggles of breaking up in small town with the release of his latest single, “New Hometown.”

The easy-to-listen track considers the many places that Ryan would love to relocate to after going through a heartbreak that causes him to lose his sense of home. Even though he seems to be over the relationship, the song brings up the point that every place in that little town reminds him of her.

“Well, that’s a song I wrote with Brent Anderson and Chris DuBois and basically, we’re just wanting to tell a story about this guy who’s just struggling post-breakup. See the thing is, breakups aren’t ever easy, but when you live in a small town, all those places you went before and every time you go to them again, you can’t help but think what it was like when she was there. You can’t just go hang out at a new place or with new people, ‘cause it’s the same old town with the same old places, same old people. So you just gotta find a new hometown altogether in a situation like that,” he explained about the track exclusively to Sounds Like Nashville.

Even though “New Hometown” is an exaggeration on a real-life situation Ryan himself went through, he still imagines the feelings of that sort of breakup to be quite raw and unfold in a familiar way.

“You know we add a little flavor like Hollywood does for dramatic purposes, but that’s something that I can relate to,” Ryan said. “When I was in high school, I was dating this girl. We broke up right after high school and I moved away from my hometown, so it wasn’t the story of my life. But after going back to the hometown after the breakup, it was like, ‘Man, I remember coming here with her and doing these things that we always used to do.’ So it’s definitely an emotion that I’m familiar with and a story that I feel pretty comfortable telling because I feel like I’ve been in a similar situation myself.”

Fans can listen to Ryan’s current single, “New Hometown” on digital streaming services and purchase the track on online music retailers now. Be sure to watch for his new album to be released in the next few months.
