Natalie Stovall is relying on the differences between wine and whiskey when it comes to matters of the heart in her new single. Released on Friday, Dec. 1, “Wine or Whiskey,” has Stovall singing of the lasting effects of her lover either staying or leaving and not knowing where their relationship stands.

“It is wine or whiskey / are you gone or with me / am I pulling you in or letting you go / shooting it down or sipping it slow / what kind of night is it gonna be / wine or whiskey,” she sings in the chorus.

Providing background vocals on the heart-wrenching ballad is Jimi Westbrook of Little Big Town. Westbrook co-wrote the track with Lori McKenna and the late Andrew Dorff.

“To be fair… when @JimiWestbrook sings… it’s never background vocals,” she replied to an excited fan on Twitter, complete with wine and whiskey emojis.

The song is a glimpse into what the Tennessee native has been working on throughout the year. Stovall revealed that her new music is more honest and hopeful than ever before.

“I’m very excited about the music I’ve been writing lately,” she explained in an interview with Idol Chatter. “I’ve always been a fighter. And even when terrible things have happened — I’m a glass half-full kind of girl. There’s no time to dwell in the darkness. I’m so thankful for the success that I do have, but I still have a long way to go to get where I want to be.”

Continued Stovall, “And I’ve been a lot more honest about that in my writing lately. About fighting and not giving up. About how hard it is to have a dream and keep coming up just a bit short. About sacrifice and heartbreak. And I’m definitely not holding back on new music or my new live show.”

The new music comes just after a stint on NBC’s The Voice where Stovall was a member of Blake Shelton’s team. After being eliminated in the battle round, Shelton called her back as his comeback artist for another shot at becoming ‘The Voice.’
