South Carolina rockers NEEDTOBREATHE transform into a stunning roots orchestra for a new live performance of “Banks,” part of a project that captures their first live-audience concerts since January 2020. The powerful clip premieres on Sounds Like Nashville today (April 14), with more from the show coming soon.
Taking a glittering stage in front of a crowd starved of live tunes, the acclaimed band found a sense of organic elegance for the new tune “Banks.” With a heartfelt swell of emotion, frontman Bear Rinehart sings of a love like the banks of a river — holding close but never holding back — surrounded by guitars, a piano, a violin and cello string section, dobro and thick harmony voices. The multi-layered sound was joined by the look of a natural symphony hall, too, with chandeliers hanging in the outdoor stage’s background that only add to the moment’s pristine sophistication.
It was just part of a recent show that found NEEDTOBREATE at The Caverns in Pelham, Tennessee, a famous natural cave converted into an acoustic wonderland. This show was above ground and socially distanced due to the pandemic, of course, one of three sold-out performances recorded to create the Live from the Woods Vol. 2 album.
“We had a blast recording ‘Live From the Woods Vol. 2’ last month,” Reinhart tells SLN. “We were eager to safely get back to doing what we love most; playing live music. ‘Banks’ has been a fan favorite since its release last year. We’ve seen people get tattoos of the lyrics and also heard of so many couples who had it played at their wedding. For this special live version, we invited some of our friends to play strings with us and are so thrilled with how it turned out.”
“I wanna hold you close but never hold you back / Just like the banks to the river / And if you ever feel like you are not enough / I’m gonna break all your mirrors / I wanna be there when the darkness closes in / To make the truth a little clearer / I wanna hold you close but never hold you back / I’ll be the banks for your river,” goes the powerful chorus hook.
Live from the Woods Vol. 2 comes out Friday (April 16) featuring songs from throughout the acclaimed band’s career, and including new tracks from the recent Out of Body LP. Their first Live from the Woods album came out in 2015, and NEEDTOBREATHE singer Reinhart recently joined Carrie Underwood for the official live-streamed performance of her gospel album, My Savior.
