Newcomer Nikita Karmen finds beauty in a sometimes ugly world with the new track, “Own Roses,” and she arranges that beauty like a bouquet for a video companion.

All about taking what you’ve got and making it what you want, the heartening chill-pop jam is a breath of fresh air for a turbulent era, premiering on Sounds Like Nashville today (January 29). With a breathy, gentle vocal that swells over time to gain a sense of inner strength and optimism, the song is dedicated to life’s bigger picture — and it’s a powerful lead-in to Karmen’s debut album, The Garden, which is also out today.

Karmen wrote the track about how hard it was for her to move to Nashville all the way from Australia, and it’s mix of quiet atmosphere and crisp beats were produced by country artist Walker Hayes.

“Own Roses was a song I wrote about the growing pains I went through when I moved my life to the other side of the world to chase a dream,” Karmen tells Sounds Like Nashville. “I think we grow the most when we are the most uncomfortable and I’m really grateful for the whole journey that lead to the place I am now AND the person I am now too.”

“I’m so glad she allowed me to produce and be a part of a project that she was so passionate about,” Hayes added. “I’m just flat out glad to be associated with Nikita Karmen.”

“Somehow in the weeds / I grew my own roses,” Karmen sings, encouraging dreamers everywhere to keep plugging away. Meanwhile, a candid video filmed by her sister in Nashville captures the bountiful “garden” she’s made of her everyday life.

Nikita Karmen was born and raised in Sydney, Australia, and moved to Nashville after visiting for the CMA Music Festival one year. She toured as part of Bobby Bones’ The Raging Idiots road band, and has previously released Hayes-produced tracks like “Came Close,” “Then Some” and more. Her debut album, The Garden, is out now.
