Paul Cardall and Thompson Square capture the darker side of a white Christmas in their new track, “All I See Is Snow,” teaming up for a heart-wrenching holiday collaboration.

Pairing the hit country duo with an award-winning contemporary-Christian pianist, the emotional track is steeped in heartbreak and the tragedy of loss, which is often felt so keenly around the holidays. But while it unfolds like a vocal standout, the listener is left to decide for themselves what that tragedy might be — only making it that much more intriguing, and universal.

Full of husband-and-wife harmony and broken-hearted lyrics, it’s the sonic equivalent of a cold winter landscape, and it’s video comes to life in theatric style. It finds Keifer and Shawna Thompson feeling miles apart, while Cardall pounds out song’s frigid piano melody — and seems to cast Shawna in the role of a real-life ice queen.

“Although I’m known for my instrumental arrangements, I’m a huge fan of country music, and Keifer and I have often talked about collaborating,” Paul Cardall says of the ballad. “Recently, I shared my personal story with him. Each of us had experienced a lot of grief from losing loved ones. The music and lyrics for ‘All I See Is Snow’ flowed out of us like pure inspiration. Because of our personal experiences and the ability to dial into a universal human emotion, that tune was a gift to both of us. So many people go into the holidays excited while many experience loneliness, grief, stress, and even depression. ‘All I See Is Snow’ feels like a Covid-Christmas song, but the beauty in what we do is to write in hope and encourage people that things will get better.”

Thompson Square broke out at country radio with the flirtatious “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not?” in 2010, and just released their own, much more cheerful holiday original, “It’s Almost Christmas.” Meanwhile, Cardall’s new album, The Broken Miracle, comes out February 5 and will include “All I See Is Snow,” as well as a collaboration with David Archuleta.
