Newcomer Payton Smith captures the propulsive romance of his debut single in his first music video, sharing the heart-pounding clip for “Like I Knew You Would.”

Directed by David Colón and pairing natural majesty with stage-rocking thrills, the clip harnesses Smith’s Louisiana upbringing. Two young lovers explore the beauty of a waterfall and at the same time, fall deeply into each other, while Smith goes on to tap that emotional high-point for his electrifying brand of showmanship.

“Using vivid lyrics or musical tones to create moments are really important to me as a songwriter, and I really wanted my first music video to reflect that,” he says. “So the visuals definitely reflect those specific details – falling in love, down to the river across the railroad tracks – just like I did growing up. Then in the performance part, we captured energy of the production to pull it all together.”

Written by Smith with Ronnie Bowman and Dan Fernandez, “Like I Knew You Would” is out now and featuring a mix of fleet-fingered guitar and pop-friendly vocals — plus a swaying beat. It’s part of the emerging artist’s self-titled EP, and Smith is featured in the 2020/2021 CMT Listen Up class.
