The say opposites attract, and P!nk and Chris Stapleton gave some strong evidence for the claim at the 53rd annual CMA Awards. Their collaboration on “Love Me Anyway” was the night’s first true duet, mixing pop sophistication and gritty country soul.
Backed by a subdued string section which included an upright acoustic bass, P!nk and Stapleton stood side-by-side to deliver the track off her Hurts 2B Human album.
With the pop songstress taking the lead, the pair created a vibrant emotional mix which was as intriguing as it was delicate, with P!nk rapped in a red cloak and sporting a wide brimmed Western hat. Stapleton only jumped in to support the track’s heartfelt chorus, but his electrifying voice elicited immediate cheers from the crowd — audible even as the song played on.
Stapleton was nominated in three categories going into the night, including Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and Single Record of the Year for “Millionaire.” Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton teamed up to host the show for the first time, taking place at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena.
