AMERICAN IDOL Ð "316 (On with the Show: Grand Finale)" - "American Idol" rounds out its all-new innovative and critically celebrated season on ABC, crowning its next singing sensation live during the epic grand finale event, SUNDAY, MAY 17 (8:00-10:00 p.m. EDT). (ABC) DOUG KIKER, GARY LEVOX

Country superstar group Rascal Flatts performed their signature song “Bless The Broken Road” with American Idol Season 3 favorite, Doug Kiker, fondly remembered by fans as the “Garbage Man” from his first audition.

Before the acts belted out their song on the finale, Idol directors showed viewers behind-the-scenes footage of Luke Bryan breaking the news to Kiker, who received it in both utter shock and excitement, evidently glowing with pure joy.

Much like all live performances this season, their collaboration was seamlessly pieced with the help of technology.

The “Garbage Man” started off the first verse in a style reminiscent of his first Idol audition, but this time, a more polished and improved one. The country trio—comprised of Gary LeVox, Jay DeMarcus and Joe Don Rooney —then joined in from the second verse, blending their velvety harmonies and falsettos together to seal the remarkable performance. At the end of it, all three judges stood up with a resounding applause, with Richie exclaiming, “that was so good!”

Even though the country group released this song some 16 years ago, their delivery is still as flawless as ever. And as fans would it say, it never gets old.
