Scotty McCreery Notches Fourth Straight Number One With ‘You Time’
Can he keep the streak alive with "Damn Strait"?
Country singer Scotty McCreery is on a roll. The baritone singing hit maker’s career resurgence continues with another Number One single this week, as “You Time” tops country radio playlists nationwide.
Marking McCreery’s fourth Number One in a row — a figure dating back to 2017’s double-Platinum “Five More Minutes” — “You Time” currently sits atop both the Billboard and Mediabase/Country Aircheck radio charts. But as he told Sounds Like Nashville for our September cover story, this is all a bit unexpected.
Chatting about the success he’s found since a surprise departure from his post-American Idol record label, McCreery was candid about how things have been going.
“Honestly, this last chapter of my career, I’ve never had that before with the Number Ones at radio and the crowds we’re getting at our shows,” McCreery admitted. “To me it kind of feels like we’re just getting started, as opposed to ‘Hey, this is your 10th year doing this.’”
After “Five More Minutes,” McCreery posted two more hits from the album Seasons Change, sending “This Is It” and “In Between” to Number One. Both of those tracks were deeply personal, and with “You Time,” the singer-songwriter took the same approach. Writing a lengthy post on Instagram, McCreery explained that the track was once again inspired by his wife, Gabi, marking the lead single from his fourth studio album, Same Truck. And as the COVID-19 pandemic dragged on, the track seemed to connect more and more. His win streak was kept alive.
“2.5 years ago our lives were as busy as ever. I was on the road, and you were working at the hospital. For a couple that had just been married, it seemed like we never got to see each other,” McCreery wrote. “So on March 6th, 2019 I wrote a song called ‘You Time’ about how I wanted the world to slow down so we could spend more time together (I really didn’t mean for the universe to take that song so literally..🙃🤦🏻♂️)”
Scotty McCreery went on to thank his fans and team for the success, and noted that he’s already got plans to keep it going. His next single is the clever-but-heartbroken “Damn Strait” — which isn’t really personal, but is filled with references to the great George Strait — and McCreery recently performed the track on NBC’s Today.
