Netflix’s star-studded tribute concert to Dolly Parton is now live, featuring some of the biggest artists on the planet channeling their love for a true country legend. And you can get a sneak peak of it here.
Sharing a joyful clip of Miley Cyrus and Shawn Mendes covering Dolly’s iconic duet with Kenny Rogers — “Islands In the Stream” — it’s just a taste of what amounts to nearly an hour of great tunes, and recognition for one of music’s most giving superstars.
Part of a tribute concert that highlighted Parton’s charity work as the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year, the clip finds two of the modern era’s most-recognizable voices reimagining an absolute classic. Cyrus and Mendes sing alongside producer Mark Ronson (who plays guitar), and with the song’s gentle sway in full effect, it’s just as moving as it ever was.
Standing side-by-side on a sleek black stage, they’re duet is full of appreciation for a true country icon — and a hint at what the rest of the night was like. Cyrus is famously part of the Parton family, since Dolly is in fact her godmother. And Mendes clearly puts his all into the emotional, arm-in-arm anthem, his warbling vocal in some ways recalling Parton’s famous songbird style.
Hosted by Little Big Town and also featuring performances by Chris Stapleton, Katy Perry and more, the show was recorded before the 2019 Grammys and meant to celebrate Parton’s ongoing philanthropy. Capturing the glitzy night on film, Dolly Parton: A MusiCares Tribute is out now, and available for streaming only on Netflix.
