Teenage country upstart Tegan Marie channels the grace and power of a wild mustang in her new video for the track “Horses.”

Co-written by the 15-year-old Michigan native with Stephanie Chapman, Nelly Joy and Jason Reeves, the sweeping country-pop anthem was inspired by Marie’s love of horses – and the idea that every living thing is somehow connected. For the video, she teamed with DreamWorks Animation and the Netflix series Spirit Riding Free, capturing both the majesty of the animals themselves, and the show’s theme of overcoming obstacles with your friends.

“’Horses’ is a very special song to me for so several reasons,” Marie tells Sounds Like Nashville. “I feel like it shows a different side of me that many of my fans have never seen. Don’t get me wrong – I love my upbeat, sassy songs, but it has been really refreshing to sing something so heartfelt and real.”

“I grew up riding horses, so I felt like I was totally in my element when we were filming this video,” she goes on. “They’re massive animals, but they’re also incredibly gentle, and if you’ve ever ridden or even been around a horse, you can’t deny how magical they are – just one of the many reasons it was so easy to write a song about them.”

Spirit Riding Free is a Netflix original series that centers on a group of three friends, who together experience coming of age and the power of friendship. Lucky, a gutsy 12-year-old girl, befriends a wild mustang she names Spirit. With her two best friends and their horses by her side, they explore a world filled with endless rides and never-ending fun, push their own limits and discover what it truly means to be free. New episodes will debut on Netflix April 5th.

Following Marie’s 2018 releases “Keep It Lit” and “I Know How To Make a Boy Cry,” she is currently working on new music with producers Scott Hendricks (Blake Shelton) and Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift). Up next, she’ll hit the road with Hunter Hayes for three shows on his Closer to You Tour in April.
