Rising country duo The Hobbs Sisters have released a contemplative breakup song, “What If It Was,” and Sounds Like Nashville has your first listen of it.

Just as the song’s title suggests, the twin sisters—Lauren and Hannah Hobbs—ruminate on the “what if’s” of a broken relationship. A relationship is brought to an end, and the inevitable regret lingers. Just like any romantic breakup, one is often left wondering if the right decision was made—and the sisters perfectly capture the essence of that.

“What if it was wrong, for us to move on / What if we were meant to stay together ‘stead of fall apart / Still contemplate if we made a mistake / We told each other what we had wasn’t love / But what if it was,” the pair sing melancholically over a pensive rhythmic guitar-driven production. The track was penned by both siblings alongside Nashville songwriter Sean Swenson.

“When we wrote this song, we tried to capture the feeling of nostalgia you get when thinking about a past relationship.” Lauren Hobbs tells Sounds Like Nashville. “We felt like a lot of people could relate to the experience of running into an ex and wondering if breaking up was the right thing to do.”

“Sean brought the title to the session that day and we were instantly hooked,” Hannah Hobbs adds. “We loved the melody and felt like it was a really relatable idea. We’re so excited to be releasing it!”

Prior to this, The Hobbs Sisters released their songs “Since I Met You” and “Never Find Another” last year. The Pittsburgh, PA natives have also opened for country stars Lady A, Charlie Daniels, Brett Eldredge, Sammy Kershaw, Diamond Rio and more on the road.

While you wait for “What If It Was” to officially drop tomorrow (March 19), listen to the exclusive premiere of it above.
