With the amount of success Luke Combs has already had in his career, it’s hard to believe he released his debut single just over five years ago. Since his debut, Combs’ career has skyrocketed at an almost unprecedented rate. In a few short years, he has managed to release 12 No. 1 singles, three No. 1 albums and win coveted awards like the CMA Entertainer of the Year trophy. All these accomplishments have made Combs one of the most successful acts in current country music. In honor of those achievements, here’s a look back 10 of his best singles so far.

(Arranged chronologically)

  1. “Hurricane” — from This One’s For You

Like a hurricane, Luke Combs stormed into mainstream country music with this hit single in 2016. Officially released in October 2016, this song made its way up the charts, landing at the No. 1 spot on the Country Airplay chart in May 2017. It spent two weeks at the top, making Combs the first artist to pull off a multi-week debut single since Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” in 2012. The song was an undeniably successful debut, which led to Combs being nominated for New Male Artist/Vocalist at both the CMA and ACM Awards within the next year. The track has since been certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA.

2. “When It Rains It Pours” — from This One’s For You

In 2017, Combs continued his upbeat tunes about love (and, apparently, weather) with his sophomore single, “When It Rains It Pours.” In this song, which may seem at first glance to be about a break up, Combs details his good luck after his girlfriends leaves him. These lucky occurrences include winning a scratch off ticket lottery, a free vacation through a radio contest, and humorously, the opportunity to never see his “ex-future-mother-in-law” ever again. The tongue-in-cheek tune acts as a comeback to his ex-girlfriend, as he boasts about how he’s much better without her. “When It Rains It Pours” became Combs’ second No. 1 hit, landing there just six months after his first.

3. “She Got The Best of Me” — from This One’s For You

For his fourth major-label single, Combs stayed within the topic of love, releasing a heartbreak tune about a relationship that ended poorly. Although the lyrics paint a sorrowful picture (“She got the best of me, she broke my heart,”) the production is strong and anthemic like many of Combs’ tunes. “She Got the Best of Me” was another success for Combs, becoming his fourth consecutive No. 1 song, earning 2x Platinum status and continuing to pave his impressive road in country music. Combs also won his first-ever CMA Award, New Male Artist of the Year, the year this song was released.

4. “Beautiful Crazy” — from This One’s For You

In December 2018, Combs ended his incredibly successful This One’s For You album era with “Beautiful Crazy.” A longtime fan favorite, this soft ballad was released with much fanfare, and it landed at No. 6 on the Hot Country Songs chart before it was officially out. Once released, the tune reached the No. 10 spot on the Country Airplay chart while “She Got The Best of Me” was still on the chart. It finally reached No. 1 in March 2019. The tune stayed at No. 1 for seven weeks — Combs’ longest run on the chart — and it has since earned 4x Platinum status. The award nods rained down after the release of this song, with Combs being nominated for New Male Artist at the ACMs and Male Vocalist of the Year at the CMAs, among many other honors. The track also won Song of the Year at the 2019 CMA Awards.

5. “Beer Never Broke My Heart” — from What You See Is What You Get

Combs’ debut album garnered more success in three years than some artists see in 10, and he kicked off his sophomore album with a bang with “Beer Never Broke My Heart.” In this thundering song, Combs sings about all the things in life that have let him down — such as “diamond rings and football teams” — but one thing that never hurt his feelings is beer. The feel-good tune became Combs’ sixth No. 1 in 2019, continuing his country music dominance into his next album.

6. “Even Though I’m Leaving” — from What You See Is What You Get

Up until late 2019, many of Combs’ releases were uptempo or positive ballads, but in September of that year, he released his first tearjerker with “Even Though I’m Leaving.” In this acoustic-driven song, Combs recalls being a little kid afraid of the dark, but his father reassures him that everything will be okay even when he leaves the room. The story continues through the song, then referring to that young boy growing up and leaving home. Then, in the heartbreaking last chorus, it is revealed that the father is dying, and he reassures his son that he’ll still be by his side when he’s gone. This emotional ballad reached the top of the Billboard and Country Airplay charts, spending five, non-consecutive weeks atop the former.

7. “Does To Me” ft. Eric Church — from What You See Is What You Get

For his third single from his What You See Is What You Get album, Combs teamed up with country superstar Eric Church for “Does To Me.” In this tune, Combs and Church trade lines as they reminisce on some of the high points of their lives, which may not seem like a big deal to other people, but they mean a great deal to them. Unsurprisingly, a song with this kind of star power reached the No. 1 spot, becoming Combs’ eighth consecutive No. 1 hit — an impressive feat for a still-new artist.

8. “Forever After All” — from What You See Ain’t Always What You Get (Deluxe Version of Previous Album)

While Combs’ country music career was steadily climbing, exciting events were also happening in his personal life. In August 2020, Combs married his girlfriend of four years, Nicole Hocking. Fittingly, he released a love song call “Forever After All” not long after they were married. In this sweet ballad, Combs lists off items that don’t last forever — such as beer, trucks and blue jeans — but one thing that does last forever is his love for his wife. Combs is one of the few artists who sees the same amount of success with ballads as he does with upbeat singles, and this one became his 11th No. 1 hit.

9. “Cold As You” — from What You See Ain’t Always What You Get

Combs has a knack for writing songs that feature solid metaphors, and in “Cold As You,” he took a page from “Beer Never Broke My Heart” by using beer to describe a relationship. In this song, Combs describes frequenting a bar that he calls a “junked out joint off a backroad,” where he drinks cold beer. However, in the song’s hook, he comments that even the beer isn’t as cold his ex. Released in July 2021, this tune became Combs’ 12th No. 1 hit.

10. “Doin’ This” — from upcoming album

In November 2021, Combs released his 13th radio single with the personal “Doin’ This.” Combs debuted the song on the 2021 CMA Awards on November 10. This track finds Combs reflecting on his ultra-successful career, but he reveals in the track that even if he wasn’t as successful as he is, he’d still be playing music. “At the Grand Ole Opry or a show in some no-name town / I’d still be doin’ this if I wasn’t doin’ this,” he sings. As of March 2022, “Doin’ This” is still making its way up the charts, but it seems to be poised to become Combs’ 13th No. 1 hit.
