Walker Hayes has never been shy to sing praises and share about his wife Laney, and the immense love they share for each other. Most recently, his selfless love for her was penned down and crafted into a song; his emotional new single, “Don’t Let Her.”

One thing perhaps unbeknownst to many is the fact that the two had initially broken up for a couple of months when they were younger, before they got married.

“I didn’t know I wanted to marry Laney until we actually broke up for about nine or ten months right after college, and it was the hardest, it was almost like a divorce. We had been together for six, seven years, [but] that volatility that made us so beautiful also made up explosive… I wouldn’t have said a lot of peers or families thought we were the greatest match, but we knew there was something we couldn’t duplicate,” Hayes shared on their relationship and initial separation.

But looking back in hindsight, the singer believes the time apart helped the couple grow as individuals and in their certainty of each other’s presence in their lives. “I think that year allowed us to mature and honestly, we didn’t see each other, and then we saw each other at a wedding and I knew…”

The singer had initially tried to trick himself into thinking he was over her, and even plotted what to say to her when they would run into each other at a mutual friend’s wedding. Hayes thought he would be able to say, “hey, good to see you, good luck with your life, you look great.” But, as he recalls, when he saw her, “it was a nausea.”

“I was sick in my stomach. I didn’t say that moment, ‘Hey we’re gonna get married.’ But I did call someone I was seeing [then] and said, ‘Hey, I can’t. I have to be honest with you, I saw Laney and nothing, absolutely nothing has changed about the way that I [feel], my passion, the way that I feel about her.’”

That conversation and chance meeting didn’t take long to fortify the couple’s love for each other and transpire into a lifetime commitment. To be exact, it took only six to seven weeks before both Walker got engaged to Laney.

The 39-year-old admitted that while a lot of people didn’t like them as individuals when they got together, he knew that he “wanted to be with Laney [and] do forever with her,” and that was all that mattered.
