Delivered with effortless power and showing off Clarkson’s impressive vocal range, the moment was part of a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, in an opening segment the star calls “Kelly-oke.” Each day she covers one of her favorite tunes, and with Underwood’s 2006 breakout found a way to deliver both sweetness and a sassy vocal rasp as she walked the show set, made to resemble a concert stage.
“Before He Cheats” was written by Chris Tompkins and Josh Kear and appeared on Underwood’s Some Hearts album debut. Since her show premiered in September, Clarkson has also covered other all-over-the-map hits like Lizzo’s “Juice,” Annie Lennox’s “Walking on Broken Glass,” Madonna’s “Express Yourself,” Aretha Franklin’s “Think,” and Lady Gaga‘s “Bad Romance,” — even kicking the first show off with Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.”
Clarkson tells People she had been approached to do a talk show in past, but the veteran of TV blockbusters like American Idol and The Voice didn’t think she’d be any good at hosting. It was her husband/manager who finally convinced her to give it a shot. “Definitely at first I was like, ‘No.’ she says. “And then I was like ‘Well wait, that could be really fun.’ And then we shot the pilot and it was like second nature.”
