Tim McGraw tributes love that can weather life’s storms in a new TV performance of “Hard to Stay Mad At” — and gives fans a peak at the palatial mansion he and wife Faith Hill call home in the process.

Appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert Monday (August 24), the country superstar gathers a full band into a window-lined alcove in his Nashville house, with room to spare. Bathed in soft colors and exterior light with 20-foot-tall ceilings and full-length drapes framing the scene, the setting actually fits McGraw’s song like a glove.

An unconventional and classy tune that avoids being predictable, the song’s hook is sprinkled throughout the track’s instead of its understated chorus, all about the steady kind of love that lasts for years and years. Delicate touches of steel guitar, piano and acoustic guitar create a clean, simple foundation, but it’s McGraw’s smoky voice that takes center stage.

“You’re hard to stay mad at / I know sometimes we fight sometimes we cuss / I swear we do it for the making up / We’re damn good at that,” goes one of the verses.

“Hard to Stay Mad At” comes off McGraw’s just-release Here On Earth album, his first solo set in five years. His nostalgic current single, “I Called Mama,” is out now, and he’ll perform from Nashville’s tiny Bluebird Cafe as part of the 55th ACM Awards on Sept. 16.
