Billy Ray Cyrus Heading To Broadway
Billy Ray Cyrus is heading to the Big Apple for a stint on Broadway later this year.
The “Achy Breaky Heart” singer will be joining the cast of “Chicago” to play the role of criminal lawyer Billy Flynn.
Cyrus, who has appeared in Lifetime movies and starred alongside daughter Miley Cyrus in “Hannah Montana,” had actually never seen “Chicago” until producers invited him to see the show. Actor John O’Hurley was playing Flynn at the time. “His performance was so brilliant, and I fell in love with this character,” Cyrus says. “He’s got a lot of heart and soul, but he’s got an agenda, too. I like that contradiction.”
After seeing the show, Cyrus took time to watch the movie and was equally impressed by Richard Gere’s adaptation. “I’m probably going to borrow from both performances — but make it my own, as they say in this business.”
However, despite his acting experience, Cyrus is still a bit apprehensive about acting on Broadway. “I get a little nervous thinking about it. Maybe a lot nervous.”
Cyrus’ role will be a seven-week engagement starting Nov. 5. Other country stars who have appeared on Broadway include Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers and Reba.
