Grammy winning singer BJ Thomas, famous as the hitmaker behind “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” and others, has revealed a stage-four lung cancer diagnosis. The Grand Ole Opry member made an announcement to fans and friends on Tuesday (March 23).

In a post to his social media accounts, the Grammy Hall of Fame inductee says he’s receiving treatment in a local health care facility in Texas, and is hopeful for a complete recovery.

“I just wanted to take this unique opportunity to share my gratitude to Gloria, my wonderful wife and my rock for over 53 years, my family, friends, and fans,” Thomas writes. “I’m so blessed to have had the opportunity to record and perform beautiful songs in pop, country, and gospel music, and to share those wonderful songs and memories around the world with millions of you. I ask all of you for your prayers during this time and that my music can live on with you.”

Over the years, BJ Thomas found success in pop, country and gospel music, scoring enduring hits like “Hooked On A Feeling,” “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “I Just Can’t Help Believing,” “(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song,” and more. Straddling the murky line between rock, pop and country, he was honored with both Grammy and Dove Awards alike, and saw most of his success in the late ’60s and early ’70s. “Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head,” written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, became especially significant, appearing in the 1969 movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

After breaking the news, contemporaries like The Oak Ridge Boys, Lee Greenwood, TG Sheppard and T. Graham Brown expressed their support, offering well wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery.
