Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend have some new competition on their hands for this season of NBC’s The Voice, as pop superstar Ariana Grande joins the coaches group. But it looks like she’s already formed an alliance.

In a new clip promoting Season 20, Grande and Shelton meet for the first time — on camera — and it goes just about how you’d expect. Totally unexpectedly, that is to say.

Coming into this season’s competition, it would seem like Shelton and Grande could not have less in common. He’s a good-natured country boy from Oklahoma, with an awe-shucks demeanor and a crafty habit of winning. Meanwhile, she’s a global phenomenon with the reputation of a fierce force of nature. Sparks were bound to fly, and it looks like they already have.

The clip takes place on the set of that campfire-themed commercial the coaches filmed — the one where Grande makes a “grande” entrance, according to Shelton — and producers made sure to get each coach’s thoughts on the other. Grande went first, admitting she didn’t know her soon-to-be nemesis.

“I haven’t met Blake, but I hear that he’s … umm … a handful,” Grande says. And seperately, Blake is ready for a challenge. “Bring it on, Ariana. Bring. It. On,” he says.

But surprisingly, their first meet up seems to forge a bond. The two stars square off just before filming begins, and after cracking a joke about tumbleweeds, Grande gets Shelton laughing right away. Then they hug it out, and set the stage for the season to come.

“We already have a handshake agreement,” Shelton says. “We’re gonna go at each other’s throats.”

“I don’t know what to say other than, ‘Match made in heaven,'” Grande adds.

You can catch Blake Shelton, Ariana Grande and the rest when Season 21 of The Voice kicks off September 20.
