Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani appeared on the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards to perform their romantic duet, “Happy Anywhere.” While the couple could not physically be in Nashville for the show, they were able to create their own virtual Bluebird Café. The two first appeared sitting in front a green screen surrounding them on three sides.
“Gwen and I wish we could be in Nashville tonight but we couldn’t,” Shelton said prior to the performance while in front of the green screen. “But with the magic of television, welcome to the Bluebird Café.”
After saying that, Shelton snapped his fingers and the Bluebird Café magically appeared around them. They then dove into the duet, which featured Shelton on guitar as the only instrumentation. The two looked at one another as they sang the lyrics about being happy anywhere as long as they are together.
“I’m running wide open, I was born with my feet in motion, But since I met you, I swear I could be happy anywhere,” sang Shelton, as Stefani provided backup vocals.
About halfway through their performance, the camera started to pan around them as they continued singing, showing the virtual Bluebird Café in its entirety. In addition to performing at the awards, Shelton is nominated for Single of the Year for “God’s Country.” He was also nominated for the previously-announced categories of Song of the Year, Video of the Year, and Music Event of the Year.
With the exception of Shelton and Stefani, who had to create their own Bluebird Café, the 55th Academy of Country Music Awards took place on Wednesday, September 16 from three stages in Nashville: the Grand Ole Opry house, the Ryman Auditorium and the Bluebird Café. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the show was postponed from its original date and location, which was supposed to be in Las Vegas in April. Other performers include Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Dan + Shay and more.
The 55th Academy of Country Music Awards, hosted by Keith Urban, are live from Nashville tonight (9/16) on CBS at 8/7c.
