Blake Shelton and his pop-superstar fiancée, Gwen Stefani, have one of the most talked-about relationships in music. But for the most part, they’ve kept the genesis of their odd-couple love to themselves — until now.

Speaking with Apple Music 1’s Zane Lowe for a wide-ranging ‘At Home With’ conversation, Shelton opened up about what brought he an Stefani together, and how he’s come to terms with dating a true pop icon.

According to the country star, he and Stefani were both getting over divorces when they started dating — and they wondered out loud if the whole thing was just a rebound. That was the inspiration for the first song they wrote together, “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” and that song was the moment Shelton woke up to the reality of his situation. The pair have since released two Number One hits together and are beloved by fans, but Shelton says he’s still trying to play it cool.

“It was interesting because all of a sudden there was this girl that I was just starting to see and spend time with, and that I was obviously crazy about,” Shelton says. “As we wrote this song [‘Go Ahead and Break My Heart’] … it was only then did it dawn on me … that, ‘Oh my God, I’m writing a song with Gwen Stefani.’ Only then did it hit me, she’s an incredible songwriter. These things she’s coming up with, and then her voice on the voice notes and the way she sounded just singing it like a little scratch vocal to show me what she was thinking? It’s like that voice, you talk to her and she sounds like Gwen, but when she sings, all of a sudden it’s the girl, it’s ‘Don’t Speak.’ It’s that icon.”

The smitten star says that feeling has never left him, and is actually at its peak anytime they get onstage together. Whenever Stefani is in attendance at one of Shelton’s shows, they try to surprise the crowd. But it’s more of a treat for Shelton than the fans.

“I’m still more in blown away, fan, shocked mode when I actually work with her,” he explains. “And there’s been times where she comes out on stage … And here I am dying from the time I … walk out on stage until that moment hits, because I know on that set list people are going to sh** in their seats when Gwen Stefani walks out here. It’s like I’m a kid on Christmas morning.”

Shelton went on to talk about how his life changed once he started working on NBC’s The Voice, as well as how he got his start in Nashville at age 17 and what he wants his career to be about now that he’s getting older (Shelton turns 45 on June 18). But there’s more backstory on he and Stefani’s love that fans have yet to hear.

Meanwhile, Blake Shelton just released the faithful track “Bible Verses,” and his current single is the romantic “Minimum Wage”– both from his 2021 album, Body Language. He gets back on the road for the Friends & Heroes Tour on August 18 in Omaha, Nebraska, and he and Stefani are still working on a date for their upcoming wedding.
