With the help of fans and social media, Blake Shelton has claimed the inaugural title of #SocialSuperstar at the 2016 CMT Music Awards.

“Well, uh, CMT’s Social Superstar, that’s not what I was going for but what the hell? I mean, I just like to have a few drinks and get on Twitter every now and then, man,” said Shelton. “I didn’t know you could get paid for that, but damn. See, kids, something for y’all to strive for. I did have a serious conversation with a friend of mine, Shane Tarleton. He texted me today and said ‘if you win some sort of CMT Award, please thank the people who actually make the videos,’ even though this is not connected to that, but thank you to all of the producers and directors and people that I’ve worked with over the years for working hard on the videos. I love y’all. Thank you to the fans for following me on Twitter. I won! Yes!”

Other nominees for the #SocialSuperstar Award included Kelsea Ballerini, Brett Eldredge, Lindsay Ell, Jake Owen, and Thomas Rhett.

The #SocialSuperstar award was fan-voted through Twitter and Instagram. Fans voted using the hashtag #CMTAwards and the artist’s tag, #VoteKelsea, #VoteBrett, #VoteLindsay, #VoteJake, #VoteThomas or #VoteBlake.
