The name Bobby Bones didn’t just appear overnight—it took hard work, negative press and a singlet to get to the place where it is now.

Bones stopped by NBC’s TODAY Show on Wednesday (May 18) to talk to Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb about his new book, Bare Bones: I’m Not Lonely If You’re Reading This Book. The radio personality chatted with the ladies on how he became the household name that he is now after facing adversity and hardships in his home life.

“I come from a place where a lot of people come from. You know, I didn’t have a dad growing up and my mom died in her 40s from drugs and alcohol. So I come from this tiny town and I feel like if I’m able to get out of that, that others can too. So that’s what started this,” Bones said about the idea behind his book.

The ladies also asked the burning question everyone wants to know the answer to: how did Bones come up with his now famous show name?

“Well, there’s a story when I was a young eighth grader and I was wrestling and my shorts tore,” said Bones. “You know, and then the nickname T-Bone happened and lots of things happened in the middle of that, so we’ll go with that!”

Bones also talked about the secret publicity prank he pulled on everyone, where he put out negative press out in Nashville in order to up the ratings of The Bobby Bones Show. While he admits he was never caught during the plot, he did say some people weren’t too happy with his jokes despite boosting his ratings.

“I felt that confident that I needed to be trashed,” he said.

His trip to Studio 1A was definitely an awestruck moment for Bones as he put up numerous Instagram posts about his time with many captioned as ‘Wow.’
