Episode #237 of Bobby Bones’ podcast, the BobbyCast, was a two-part episode in which Bobby chatted with Brett Young and Matt Ramsey of Old Dominion. First, Bobby checked in with Brett, who, at the time, was self-isolating on his tour bus in order to keep his family safe after his time touring in Europe.

“I had been to Amsterdam, Berlin, Stockholm and Oslo, and I had been on like six planes,” he explains. “I was like, if this can take 14 days for symptoms to show, I feel fine now, but what if I start having symptoms and I’m already holding my baby and sleeping in bed with my wife? I just didn’t want to take the risk.”

Brett further shared that he hasn’t been doing too much writing on the bus, as he’s been busy making business decisions about shows and postponements. He did have cable, however, so he says he’s seen “every movie.” Brett has since reunited with his wife Taylor and daughter Presley according to an Instagram post.

Bobby then chatted with Old Dominion lead singer, Matt Ramsey. Old Dominion actually cancelled their shows at the C2C Festival before the festival itself was cancelled and travel restrictions were put in place.

“[The crew] was a big part of the decision because those guys don’t have any gain for going over there,” he says. “We were just kind of putting them over there and, at the time, it seemed like we were putting them in a little bit of risk of getting stuck or maybe not getting home as easily as possible. There was just so much uncertainty around it that we just made that decision. I’m glad we made it. It sucks that we pissed some people off, but we just did it and now we look like we knew something was coming.”

Matt then went on to tell Bobby that he’s been catching up on some artwork during isolation. The singer revealed that he went to art school before becoming a musician.

“I wanted to go to either music school or art school because those were two things that I was super passionate about,” he says. “I don’t know how to read music, so I couldn’t go to music school, I would have been way behind the curve there, so art school was really my only other option.”

Bobby and Matt also chatted about Old Dominion’s various number one songs, and talked about how the Key West Songwriters Festival led Matt to getting his publishing deal. He explained that he was a stay-at-home dad at the time, and was having trouble networking in the music business. He decided to take a chance and go to the Key West Songwriters festival one year, and that’s when his luck changed.

“I waited until 3 a.m. at this little bar called The Bottle Cap, that was this open mic thing, to get up and play my song, and I got up and played ‘Wake Up Loving You,’ and the whole place went nuts,” he says.
