On episode #219 of his podcast, the BobbyCast, Bobby Bones invited country singer Russell Dickerson and his wife Kailey to chat about how they met, life on the road, and the musical journey they have been on over the years.

Early in the interview, Russell and Kailey told Bobby that they first met during a vocal class at Belmont University. The two started off as friends, and Russell would even ask Kailey advice about other girls, but it soon turned into something more.

“We were all friends of friends, she was dating somebody, I was dating somebody,” says Russell. “It was just all interwoven, slowly merging, and then we made out at a graduation party.”

It has now been ten years since Russell and Kailey got together unless you count the one month that they broke up after Russell got his first publishing deal.

“I was an idiot,” says Russell.

“He was an idiot,” Kailey agrees.

“I had just signed my pub deal, and it was about to happen for Russell Dickerson,” Russell continues. “All these promises were made from that deal, like, ‘You’re going to get a record deal, you’re going to be on radio, you’re going to be on tour, you’re going to be gone, you’re going to be going, going.’ And I was like, ‘I don’t really have time for a relationship.”

That first publishing deal didn’t end up working out for Russell, but his relationship with Kailey did. Since then, the couple has been navigating the chaos of the music world as a team. Russell told Bobby that there were some tough years when the two were struggling to make ends meet. However, that all changed thanks to Russell’s debut hit “Yours,” which hit the No. 1 spot in 2018 — four years after he had written it.

A large part of the song was music video, which was shot and edited by Kailey herself. Kailey explained that while she did go to school for music, she ended up finding a passion for photography and videography. The two shot the video on a lonely road during a tornado warning, and they happened to catch the perfect rainstorm to close out the video.

In addition to producing the video for “Yours,” Kailey also shot the video for Russell’s second single, “Blue Tacoma,” as well as various promotional and highlight videos. She took a front seat role in the early days of Russell’s career by driving the tour van, designing merch, selling merch, and more. They have since hired other people to fill those roles, but she and Russell still make decisions together.

“When management calls, they’re like, ‘Hey, can you and Kailey come in for this meeting to brainstorm,’” says Russell.

“So she’s kind of the CEO of you,” says Bobby.

“Legitimately,” says Russell.
