On episode #258 of his podcast, the BobbyCast, Bobby Bones brought on the Academy of Country Music’s New Female Artist of the Year winner, Tenille Townes, to chat about her win. Townes was surprised by the news on Thursday, August 20th when superstar Keith Urban crashed what she thought was going to be a simple Zoom interview with country radio.

“It took me a second to catch up in my brain as to what this could mean,” she told Bobby of Urban’s appearance on the Zoom. “I definitely was losing my mind because it was Keith Urban and also just because it kind of scared me. I have a tendency to scare easy, and he said ‘Boom’ in his Australian accent, which kind of sounded a lot like ‘Boo,’ and it just terrified me and it was Keith Urban all at the same time.”

Townes says that the news was a complete surprise, and she had no idea it was coming, despite the fact that her team knew for a week beforehand. The ACM Awards were originally supposed to air in April in Las Vegas, but due to COVID-19, have been rescheduled for September 16th in Nashville. The New Artist categories are often announced prior to the show, but even so, Townes had to wait a long time for the news due to the delay.

“I’m so glad that the show’s still happening, and then when they announced that it got moved to September, I was like, ‘That’s awesome, but what does that mean? That’s a long time from now,’” Townes says.

Townes was in the New Female Artist category with four other women: Caylee Hammack, Gabby Barrett, Ingrid Andress, and Lindsay Ell, and she says she’s honored to be included with her fellow female artist peers.

“It’s great,” she says. “And I love how everybody has put out records, and that there’s all of these songs from amazing female artists that are being heard. It’s awesome.”

Now that Townes is officially an ACM Awards winner, she has the opportunity to play at the show. The awards show will take place at three different locations in Nashville: the Grand Ole Opry House, the Ryman Auditorium and The Bluebird Café.  Townes revealed that she will be playing at the Ryman, and she will most likely play the song that started it all for her.

“I think I’m going to do ‘Somebody’s Daughter,’” she said.

Urban also surprised country artist Riley Green with news that he was the winner of the New Male Artist of the Year Award. The Academy of Country Music Awards will air on Wednesday, September 16th at 8/7c on CBS.
