On a hot summer day in Nashville, TN, members of the country music industry gathered within the confines of FGL House for a very important celebration. Rising country star Brett Young was there, surrounded by his “In Case You Didn’t Know” co-writers Tyler Reeve, Trent Tomlinson and Kyle Schlienger, to celebrate the success of the platinum-selling track.

Earlier in the afternoon on Tuesday (7/18), Young and Schlienger, recalled the day they wrote the tune nearly two years ago during a writers retreat in Mexico.

“I was working with a private investor and we’d been having so much success I had moved to Nashville, things were going good. I had already started talking to record labels. But we’re kind of beating our heads against the wall, going, ‘Until you have a deal, how do you get in the room with big writers?’ And one of our ideas was, well, I doubt that they would turn down a free trip to Mexico,” Young explained.

To Mexico… they went! After two days of writing ‘okay’ songs, however, the men decided to give it a rest on the third and enjoy dinner together. That’s when Tomlinson started scrolling through his list of song title ideas and landed on “In Case You Didn’t Know.”

“He didn’t say anything to us, he just started telling a story because he saw this idea that he had,” continued Young. “It reminded him of why he had the idea and his story was … basically his mom used to stop him every time he’d leave the house when he was a kid and say, ‘Hey Trent, in case you didn’t know, I love you.’ And we all kind went, ‘We’re tired, it’s late, we said we weren’t gonna write anymore, but sorry about it. We’re gonna write a song tonight.’”

The men went on to write the hit, which turned into Young’s second No.1 and each of the writers’ first. The celebration was topped off with a video from the making of the song, giving insight into the making of the song. In addition to acknowledging the success of his single, the California native’s third single from his self-titled debut album, “Like I Loved You,” was the most added at country radio for the week.

Brett Young will head back out on the road as he continues to open for Lady Antebellum’s You Look Good World Tour.
