Bucky Covington and Fiancée Expecting First Child

Exciting news for Bucky Covington! The singer and his fiancée, Katherine Cook, are expecting a child this fall.

The first time father admits to PEOPLE that it took him awhile to comprehend the big news. “Katherine came and threw a pregnancy test in front of me — three of them actually — and they all said the same thing. The only problem was I didn’t know what they were! I was like, ‘What is this? Are you okay?’ So she told me and I got so excited!”

And the sex of the baby will be no surprise, says the former “American Idol” contestant. “I want to know right now! I want to say ‘he’ or ‘she’ — I hate saying ‘it,’” explains Covington.

Though he’s still a bit nervous holding babies because “they’re so fragile,” Covington is getting some helpful dad hints from an unlikely source. “I’ve been watching a bunch of episodes of ‘Modern Family’ and they seem to help a lot. I love Phil Dunphy! I don’t know that I need to be exactly like him, but he’s a trip,” he jokes. “I’m definitely going to be a fun dad, but there’s going to be boundaries.”
