Canaan is such a great dad!

Things are a little different for Canaan Smith this Father’s Day, as this will be the first time he’ll be the one being celebrated as a dad! Smith and his wife Christy welcomed their baby girl, Virginia Rose, in October, and he’ll be spending the day with his daughter on Sunday.

“My wife’s working, so we’ll have a Daddy/Daughter day,” Smiths tells Sounds Like Nashville of his plans. “I’m sure we’ll do our routine neighborhood walk, hike or bike.”

Although Smith’s wife is working, he says he’s very excited to open the present she’s been preparing for him. With Virginia being so little, Smith is looking forward to a relaxing day, but he already has some plans for a Father’s Day tradition to start when she gets a little bit older.

“When she’s old enough, I wanna spend Father’s Day doing a scavenger hunt with Virginia,” he says. “We’ll hike and find hidden treasure. We’ll end the day with popcorn and a movie on the couch. I’ve clearly thought this through.”

Of course, Father’s Day is also a great day to honor one’s own father and remember precious Father’s Day memories from the past. For Canaan, one specific activity jumps out in his mind when he remembers spending time with his dad.

“Dad and I used to go fishing on the lake when I was growing up,” he says. “I have the best memories from those days.”

Smith announced that he and Christy were expecting in September 2019, just over a month before they would welcome baby Virginia. He explained why he kept the news under wraps to SLN.

“I really dialed back on social media being a part of my life in general over the past couple of years,” he says. “Before social media we didn’t know the minute somebody was pregnant. Everyone kind of lived their lives and announced when it happened when it happened. I felt like this was our way of having something that was just for us, that only we knew. That was special.”
