After undergoing surgeries and seeing the scars left behind from her fall, Carrie Underwood relies on her love of makeup to feel good.

It’s hard to believe someone as beautiful as Underwood could get self-conscious about her appearance, but the singer admits that she loves to sport some makeup as a way to feel more put together and ready for the day ahead.

“Makeup is a confidence builder for me,” Underwood said to People. “When I want to look hot, I like smoky eyes and eyeliner. I just feel like it’s nice to have things that enhance the things you like and cover up the things you don’t. I like walking by a mirror and I’m like, ‘Ok! I feel like I’m put together. Alright!’”

Although the Oklahoma native rings true as a natural beauty, she still enjoys the look of a made-up face in order to feel more like herself. To her, there isn’t anything wrong with throwing on some mascara or blush for that extra lift in her self-esteem.

“I’ll always put makeup on, even if it’s just a little bit,” she said to the publication about her pro-glam ways. “If I’m going someplace, I always think, ‘Somebody’s going to see me and want to take a picture with me,’ which is really great, but I hate it when I see the pictures later when I wasn’t wearing any makeup at all. So I’ll throw on a little bit — some foundation, a little bit of Smart Shade, maybe a little bronzer and mascara and I’ll be OK. I won’t feel bad about my pictures if I do that.”

Underwood’s latest single, “Cry Pretty,” is available now.
