Carrie Underwood released her new single “Ghost Story” on Friday (March 18), sharing an other-worldly revenge anthem that she says feels like the follow up to “Before He Cheats.” The track is her first new country single as a solo artist since 2018’s “Cry Pretty,” and now, she’s opening up about what comes next.

Speaking with Audacy about the song, Under starts off by saying she co-wrote “Ghost Story” with some of the writers from “Before He Cheats,” and says she immediately latched on to the song’s “cinematic” quality. Listening to it is like watching a movie in your imagination, she says.

“It’s like she’s just haunting him everywhere,” she tells Audacy. “He can’t get rid of her, her thoughts, and can’t not see her everywhere. It’s very cool, very cinematic and just, the beautiful, haunting melody is absolutely amazing, I knew I had to sing it the first time I heard it.”

Featuring a haunting vocal from the superstar, the track follows her and Jason Aldean’s ACM Single of the Year chart topper “If I Didn’t Love You,” and marks the start of a whole new album cycle. Underwood hasn’t revealed when it will be released (or what it will be called), but we do know a few things: She apparently co-produced it with Cry Pretty studio partner David Garcia, and she was aiming for a lighthearted vibe. That’s probably due in part to the fact that her last couple of projects, the spiritually-minded Christmas album, My Gift, and full on Gospel set, My Savior, were pretty serious.

“Yeah, it’s a lot of fun, and I feel like people are going to hear everything and just going to get some warm fuzzies,” Underwood told Today’s Country With Kelleigh Bannen on Apple Music Country. “Hopefully it’ll just make people happy to listen to. It’s a very like sing-into-your-hairbrush, in your house, in your room kind of album, which I think it’s going to translate well. I think people are going to like it.”

Meanwhile, Underwood has begun her first performance residency in Las Vegas at the brand new World Resorts Theater, and altough that show doesn’t yet include “Ghost Story,” she’s very much looking forward to adding it to her set list. Describing the song as a “3-minute, little mini-movie,” she once again tells Audacy that it will be a highlight moment on tour.

“I think the thing I’m looking forward to the most about playing this song live is all the things I can do with it in a live setting,” she said. “We want people to see and feel and experience the song so I’m definitely just looking forward to doing things visually and creatively to support the song and kind of take people into that world of ‘Ghost Story.’”
