There are a number of political issues that hit a hot button and same sex marriage is one of them. However, Carrie Underwood recently revealed to a UK newspaper, The Independent, that she is in full support of marriage equality.

The newlywed has had a successful first year of matrimony with husband Mike Fisher and doesn’t understand how some people can’t marry the one they love. “As a married person myself, I don’t know what it’s like to be told I can’t marry somebody I love, and want to marry,” she said. “I can’t imagine how that must feel. I definitely think we should all have the right to love, and love publicly, the people that we want to love.”

Carrie, who was raised Baptist, now attends an inter-denominational church with Mike. “Our church is gay friendly,” she added. “Above all, God wanted us to love others. It’s not about setting rules, or [saying] ‘everyone has to be like me’. No. We’re all different. That’s what makes us special. We have to love each other and get on with each other. It’s not up to me to judge anybody.”

Carrie concluded that “Above all, God wanted us to love others.” She even condemned “people who use the Bible for hate”, and added “That’s not how I would want myself as a Christian to be represented.”

Country singer Chely Wright, who announced she was a lesbian in 2010, recently told CBS ‘This Morning’ that she hoped a country artist would come out in support of equality. “I need a country artist who is a big deal, like Jay-Z in his community; He came forward and said, ‘I believe in equality for all.'”

Upon hearing about Underwood’s comments Wright tweeted that Carrie was “brave and bold” for taking a stance.
