As the night’s big country winner, Chris Stapleton had nothing to prove at the 64th annual Grammy Awards … but even so, he went ahead and reminded us all he’s an ice-cold star.

Performing his Best Country Song winning “Cold,” from the Best Country Album winning Starting Over, Stapleton sent a chill through the crowd in Las Vegas — not to mention every broken heart watching at home. With the bluesy frost of an almost-weeping guitar solo, and a Kentucky drawl that felt like it had been left out in the wintery night, he drove a dagger of sorrow through a show meant to celebrate the best of each genre, and reminded all of country’s emotional power. It was a fitting addition to a night where he also won Best Country Solo Performance for “You Should Probably Leave,” further cementing his place as a living legend.

Held for the first time in Las Vegas after it was postponed due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19, the 64th annual Grammy Awards took place on April 3. Gathering the biggest stars from across all musical genres, the night once again celebrated the best and brightest of the year in music — including country.

Stapleton came into the night as a winner already, having snagged the Best Solo Country Performance award for “You Should Probably Leave.” Along with his performance, other country stars hitting the stage included Carrie Underwood, Jimmie Allen and Brothers Osborne, and Allen was featured as the only country artist included in the coveted Best New Artist category.

The 2022 Grammy Awards were hosted by Comedy Central’s Trevor Noah, and aired live on CBS with on demand streaming available on Paramount+. Check out a list of the night’s country winners here.
