Chris Young is tracing his traditional roots in his new single, “Raised On Country.” The country crooner sings the praises of the genre he grew up on, while also tipping his hat to the singers of those songs.

“I was raised on Merle, raised on Willie / Got my honky-tonk attitude from Joe Diffie / Daddy did too, it’s family tradition / When someone cranks it up you can’t help but listen / My upbringing sounds like George Strait singing / ‘Cause if you know me, I was raised on country,” Young sings in the tune.

While name-dropping the artists that cemented his love for country music, Young explains why he connected so deeply to the music.

“It’s the only reason that I survived / Every breakup and every party / It’s the soundtrack to my life / It runs deep in my DNA,” he continues.

As a celebration of his love for traditional country, Young shared several covers of his favorite songs, including “The Fireman” by George Strait and Joe Diffie’s “Prop Me Up Beside the Jukebox (If I Die).” His final cover was of Merle Haggard’s “Silver Wings.”

The song is the first taste of Young’s unannounced forthcoming project. The album will be the follow-up to his highly successful Losing Sleep record, featuring the smash hits “Losing Sleep” and “Hangin’ On.”
