Country Music Community Mourns Death of Songwriter Andrew Dorff

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of songwriter Andrew Dorff, who passed away last night.

The son of songwriter Stephen “Steve” Dorff, Sr. and brother of actor Stephen Dorff, Andrew made his way to Music City in 2003 to pursue songwriting. In 2008, he earned a Top 10 with Martina McBride and the song “Ride.” Since then, he went on to pen hits for Kenny Chesney (“Save It For A Rainy Day”), Blake Shelton (“Neon Light”), Hunter Hayes (“Somebody’s Heartbreak”), Ronnie Dunn (“Bleed Red”) and William Michael Morgan (“Missing”), among others.

Just this year, Dorff was honored with four Million-Air Awards, for one million radio spins each of “Somebody’s Heartbreak,” “Neon Light,” “My Eyes,” and “Save It For A Rainy Day.”

“It is with immeasurable grief that we learn of the passing of our friend Andrew Dorff,” NSAI president Lee Thomas Miller said in a statement. “Our songwriting community is small and close and this loss will hurt us all deeply. Andrew was a good man and a good friend. He was an elite songwriter at the peak of his life and career. Our sincerest prayers go out to his family. May we all hug each other a little tighter this week and remember that life is fragile. Rest in peace Andrew.”

Since learning the news of his passing, many country artists have taken to social media to express their sincerest condolences over the late songwriter, whose cause of death is still unknown.

There’s a neon light at the end of the tunnel. Rest peacefully, my friend.

Last night, Nashville lost one of its most beautiful pieces. Andrew, I’m gonna miss your friendship. Your kindness. Your distinct cigar/cologne smell. Your strange kiss on my neck when you’d hug me just to make me laugh. Your affection for the finer things in life, gray t-shirts, and sunglasses inside. Most of all, I’m going to miss that huge heart of yours. Write heaven some new songs so I can learn them and accompany you again when I get there. Love you buddy. My first write with Dorff started on a back porch at 11am’ish with cigars…he knew more about me in those few hours than my best friends. He had a way of pullin the truth out! I loved every second with that man. Rest In Peace friend. You are loved @endorffin A photo posted by Ryan Griffin (@ryangriffinlive) on

I enjoyed every second of having cigars with you, & writing songs together! You were one of the true greats when it came to crafting meaningful lyrics, but you were the best at representing what it takes to be an amazing human being! Godspeed Andrew. @endorffin
