Crystal Bowersox to Play Patsy Cline on Broadway
A former “American Idol” finalist will be hitting Broadway soon to play one of Country music’s most iconic singers.
Crystal Bowersox, the runner-up of “American Idol” Season 9, will play Patsy Cline in the title role of a summer production, Always… Patsy Cline.
The play, written in 1988 by Ted Swindley, is based on the true story of Cline’s friendship with Louise Seger, a fan from Houston. The two became friends in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961 and the two continued writing until Cline’s untimely death at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963.
The musical will also feature 27 of Cline’s hits, those of which include “Walkin’ After Midnight,” “Crazy,” “Your Cheatin’ Heart,” and “I Fall To Pieces.”
The title of the show is inspired by how Cline signed her letters to Seger, which was “(Love) Always… Patsy Cline.” Actress Annette O’Toole will join Bowersox to play Seger. The theater and exact date of opening have not been announced yet.
2013 also marks the 50th anniversary of Cline’s death. The Grand Ole Opry held a remembrance of the plane crash that took the lives of Cline and several others earlier this month.
