Dan + Shay will always keep their roots within the country community, but that doesn’t mean they make their music exclusive to only the traditional sounds they aspired to create.
Throughout their rise to fame, the country duo has spent time with a number of huge artists outside of the country music genre. At this year’s Stagecoach Festival, they even snapped a photo of them with pop singers Nick Jonas and Niall Horan as they all danced around to Shania Twain’s debut at the California festival.
Although it may seem like a shock to see the two worlds collide, Dan Smyers revealed that country music has always created a bond with some of the most unlikely of friends, and they couldn’t be happier about the connection.
“We actually got to do a performance with Nick [Jonas]. We got to sing our first No. 1, ‘Nothin’ Like You,’ with Nick on the ACMs a couple years ago, which was a blast. But Niall’s music is awesome. Some of his songs are not far off…he spent a lot of time in Nashville writing with all the heavy-hitter country songwriters. So his music’s got definitely a country flair to it and I know Nick is super inspired by what’s going on here in Nashville. We’ve had many a late nights with him obsessing over Tim McGraw songs and Rascal Flatts songs,” Smyers told Sounds Like Nashville during an interview.
The hangout made fans’ eyes raise over the possibility of a future collaboration between Dan + Shay and one of their famous music friends, and the two aren’t afraid to admit they’re always keeping their ears open to what’s fresh for their growing sound.
“You never know what kind of collaborations are in the works or in the future. That’d be awesome, you never know. But either way, we love country music and we’re glad other people do too,” Smyers concluded.
Dan + Shay’s new single, “Road Trippin’,” off of their record, Obsessed, is available to purchase and stream now.
